Mobile M2M Defined
In our world, M2M / IoT are acronyms for meaningless buzzwords when used outside their application in addressing specific business problems. Even then, the devices and methods behind them are only means to an end; making business more effective, productive, and efficient.
In our use of the word, mobile means away from your infrastructure, facilities, and personnel; but where point of presence is required.
Mobile applications may be called for in a remote area of your property, ingress / egress points, your customers facility, or a remote field location.
The machines are the foot soldiers of any solution. They may be handheld, embedded, or discrete devices, and they may be powered by battery, solar, current loop / power over Ethernet, or line power.
They support three main functions:
- Peripheral Interface
- Industrial Sensors
- Level / Inventory
- AutoID Scanners
- Security Triggers
- Support Distributed Process’
- Communicate – The application determines the means of communication. The methods range from convenience to whatever the circumstances dictate. Methods include:
- Wired & wireless Ethernet
- Proprietary wireless
The protocols range from proprietary to standards based. Communication means and protocols need to be created where unique application challenges demand it, or open protocols simply adapted and applied wherever possible.
The main factors driving these architectural choices are cost, security, and the timeliness of the data requirement.
