  3. Communicate – The application determines the means of communication. The methods range from convenience to whatever the circumstances dictate. Methods include:

    2. Modbus

    5. Proprietary wireless
    6. Satellite

The protocols range from proprietary to standards based. Communication means and protocols need to be created where unique application challenges demand it, or open protocols simply adapted and applied wherever possible.

The main factors driving these architectural choices are cost, security, and the timeliness of the data requirement.
